We are not plotting to rig 2024 elections – NPP rejects claims

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been tasked to rig the 2024 elections in favour of the governing party.

According to the NDC, the alleged scheme, orchestrated under government directives, aims to interfere with the electoral process, starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2.

At a press conference on Tuesday, November 19, the NDC called for the immediate removal of the army chief, insisting that he should not be involved in the security architecture for the upcoming December polls.

However, reacting to these allegations, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, said the NDC’s claims were false.

He insisted the NDC was clutching at straws.

“The NDC clearly admits that they are losing the election, and they are finding every straw to hold on so that they tell supporters that this is the reason they lost the election. In 2016 and 2020, they made so many similar statements about us training people in places that we want to use to rig elections, and eventually, they went ahead and lost the election,” he said.

According to him, the NPP is not interested in some of these gimmicks but working towards winning the 2024 election.

“What we do know is that the military is not the Electoral Commission … I am not surprised that he came out to make this particular statement. It was completely a waste of Ghanaians’ time.

“The elections are won at the polling stations so if they are so much interested in playing the game, they should go down to the grassroots and make sure they get their vote. I am very confident that the NPP is going to win the election no matter the lies and propaganda put out there,” he said.
