Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has voiced deep frustration over his inability to meet with embattled Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, during a visit to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Speaking to journalists after leaving what he described as a tense meeting at the NIB headquarters, Dr. Bawumia said his attempts to see Wontumi were blocked due to security concerns arising from a charged crowd gathered outside the premises.
“I’m disappointed we were not allowed to see him, it’s unfortunate, especially under such difficult circumstances, ” Bawumia said.
Wontumi has been in NIB custody since Tuesday, May 27, as investigations continue into allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
On Wednesday, he was granted bail set at GH₵50 million, a condition Dr. Bawumia described as excessive and strategically designed to delay his release.
“I must put on record that the bail conditions set for Chairman Wontumi GH₵50 million are extremely onerous. How many Ghanaians can provide collateral worth that amount?” Bawumia asked. “It’s clear this was set to keep him in custody longer.”
While condemning what he believes to be a politically motivated attempt to silence a key NPP figure, Dr. Bawumia called for calm among party supporters and assured them that legal steps were underway to challenge the bail conditions.
“We will follow due process. We are committed to ensuring his release through all available legal means,” he stated.
The case has sparked significant political tension, with some NPP MPs boycotting parliamentary proceedings and alleging persecution of party officials.
Dr. Bawumia’s intervention signals the high stakes involved as the party rallies behind one of its most influential regional leaders.
