The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has sacked Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso Dr Kwaku Afriyie from the chamber.

The speaker directed Parliament’s Marshal to escort Dr Afriyie out of the chamber after he passed a ‘disrespectful’ comment.

The incident occurred on Monday, July 22, 2024, when the lawmakers were discussing the nomination of new judges to the Supreme Court by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Speaker Bagbin had urged the house to consider the full complement of the Supreme Court when the Appointments Committee presents its report on the nominees.

“I have given you the information, I have given you an idea of the expectations of the people of Ghana. That is for you to consider as part of the report and the House to decide whether we will approve or disapprove those nominations.

“His Excellency clearly stated that he is constitutionally injuncted to do what he has done, and so it is now for you to also look at,” the Speaker said.

However, Dr Afriyie challenged the Speaker’s comment, asserting that it was not within the Speaker’s purview to make such a prejudicial statement.

“And I believe that representing the good people of Sefwi Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of what you have said.”

A furious Speaker then said “This is a completely rude remark and I can send you out of the House now. It lies in my authority to do so. You represent the good people of Sefwio-Wiawso, I represent the whole country. Please Marshall take him out of the house. I will not entertain such disrespect.”
