WAEC snubs NUGS request to join exam committees
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has turned down the National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) request for immediate reforms to allow for student representation in key examination decision-making processes.
NUGS expressed concerns about what it views as the marginalisation of student voices on critical WAEC committees, including the Ghana Examinations Committee and the WAEC Investigative Committee, which are responsible for exam cancellations and investigations into malpractice.
Dr. Rosemond Wilson, Head of WAEC’s National Office, responded by indicating that the Council already has effective channels to engage with the stakeholders most impacted by their decisions.
She asserted that the inclusion of students via NUGS is unnecessary within these frameworks.
“NUGS are students, and with our exams, invigilators and supervisors are supposed to be workers of the GES. NUGS are not staff of the GES, so they cannot invigilate or supervise our exams,” she said.
Dr. Wilson further clarified that matters concerning exam malpractice and cancellations are dealt with directly between the candidates, their parents, and teachers, rendering NUGS’s involvement unnecessary.
“When it comes to investigations, we deal directly with the candidate, and the minor candidates come along with their parents and teachers to do the investigations.
“So, we do not actually need NUGS. We don’t know the role they want to play concerning the investigations,” she added.
