Two persons, identified as Abaawa Mary, aged 38, and Money Fresh, 32, have lost their lives in separate incidents at Karlo in the Suaman District of the Western North Region after falling into abandoned galamsey pits.

It is reported that Money Fresh, an illegal miner, unfortunately, slipped and fell into a galamsey pit while washing down after work.

According to an eyewitness, Money Fresh was allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.

In a different incident, Abaawa Mary reportedly ventured to an abandoned pit to collect water for her vegetable farm but tragically slipped and drowned.

It is noted that Abaawa Mary hails from Dadieso, the district capital, while details regarding Money Fresh’s hometown remain unclear.

Eric Armah, the Assemblyman for the Karlo Electoral Area, confirmed that the authorities have been notified, and the bodies have been sent to the mortuary.

He expressed concern over the hazards presented by these abandoned pits in the community, indicating that five individuals have lost their lives under similar conditions this year alone.

He urged relevant authorities to take immediate action to avert further tragedies.

This comes after a 23-year-old man was confirmed dead, while three others were left in critical condition following a collapse of a mining pit at Nkonteng, near Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, December 16, 2024.

The deceased, identified as Osei Kwabena from Offinso, was trapped in the pit for several hours leading to his death. The three others were saved but sustained injuries.

This was revealed by Koyim Mahama Iddrisu, the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
