W/R: Police officer shot dead in bullion van attack

A police officer has been confirmed dead after a bullion van he was escorting was attacked by some armed men on Tuesday.

According to police communication, the deceased, Sargent Emmanuel Chikudoh was part of a team escorting an ADB bullion van to Essam in the Western Region when the incident occurred.

The police said they received a call from the Acting Manager of the ADB bank at Sefwi Wiawso that their van, with registration number GT 9436-17 Nissan, had come under attack at the outskirt of 290 community near Asempaneye.

“On 3-12-19 at about 11:00 am, the Acting Manager of Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) of Sefwi Wiawso reported to police that their bullion van No. GT 9436-17 Nissan hard body escort team led by Saviour Amuzu came under attack by two men armed with pump-action guns at the outskirt of 290 community near Asempaneye…That the team including G/Sgt. Emmanuel Chikodoh was on its way to Essam branch to escort cash to Sefwi-Wiawso branch.”

The Police said they immediately proceeded to the scene and noticed that the deceased had sustained gunshot wounds on the head and he was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead.

“On receipt of this information, police immediately dispatched a patrol team to the area where they met the team with G/Sgt. Emmanuel Chikudoh who sustained gunshot wounds on the head. He was rushed to St. John of God Hospital, Asafo but the sergeant died before arrival. the body has been deposited at the same hospital morgue pending autopsy.”

Police report said other occupants of the vehicle managed to escape unhurt and the deceased’s rifle has been recovered by the police.

“Police have intensified patrols at the area and its environs to get the culprits arrested. Further development will be communicated,” the police said in a communication on the matter.
