Management of the Volta River Authority (VRA) has disclosed that there would be a possible controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams on November 1, 2022, due to the high rise of their reservoirs.
According to VRA, as of October 25, 2022, the elevation of the Akosombo Dam was 273.70 feet and is expected to reach the maximum operational level of 276 feet in the next 11 days if the rate of inflow continues.
Some of the communities that may be affected are Abume, New Senchi, Old Senchi, Atimpoku, Bridge Ase, Mangoase, Dzonkpo, Memordzi, Adidokope, Agordome, Vome, Manya, Ngolikpo, Kporkope, Mepekope, Sikor, Dzodzekope, Abovienya and all other areas closer to the rivers.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured the residents that they “will continue to monitor and review the inflow situation”.
Again, residents have been informed to monitor all media channels to be abreast of the daily notification that the VRA will serve the public on the spillage exercise.
The last time the Akosombo Dam was spilt was November 1, 2010.
The exercise was done to clear the excess water from the dam and was allowed to flow down the stream.
VRA said due to early notification, much havoc was not caused in that situation.
