Voters register is credible and robust – EC assures

The Electoral Commission (EC) has emphatically stated that the 2024 voters’ register is credible and robust amidst criticisms.

It has therefore urged Ghanaians to ignore any claim suggesting otherwise.

In a post on Facebook, the EC said “The 2024 Voters Register is robust and credible. Ignore assertions that the Voters Register is not fit for the 2024 Elections”.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), through its Director of Elections, Dr. Omane Boamah, had accused the commission of manipulating the voter register.

They claimed that the exhibition exercise revealed missing names and unauthorized voter transfers.

According to the party, these discrepancies could undermine the credibility of the upcoming elections if not addressed promptly.

The party further called for a forensic audit of the register and urged Parliament to probe the matter.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the NDC’s concerns as needless.

The NPP’s Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, argued that the purpose of the voter exhibition exercise is to allow political parties and the general public to identify and correct any discrepancies before the register is finalized for the 2024 elections.

Mr Nimako emphasized that the process is a routine part of election preparations and is designed to ensure the accuracy of the final voter register.

He further said that the NDC’s concerns reflect a misunderstanding of the purpose of the exhibition exercise.

EC exhibited the provisional voters’ register in more than 38,000 polling stations across the country from Tuesday, August 20 to Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

The exhibition offered voters, particularly those who registered in the just-ended mop-up registration exercise the opportunity to verify their details and identify their polling stations.
