Voters register: EC should bear the consequences if they fail to listen to the masses – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, says the Electoral Commission should bear the consequences if they continue to ignore the plea of the masses regarding the new voters’ register.

“They should tread cautiously. They shouldn’t do something that will bring confusion and chaos in this country. If they don’t want to listen to us and continue with the new registration then, whatever will happen, they have to bear the consequences, ” he said.

The former President was speaking to a delegation of fishermen, led by chief fishermen from the Western Region, who paid a courtesy call on him on Wednesday.

The NDC Flagbearer’s stance on the new voters’ register is rooted in the fact that the period to the  election is “too short.”

According to him, it was paramount for the EC to heed the call of the masses and let peace prevail.

“What is paramount is the peace that we have in this country. We have voted for seven times now, and thankfully nothing has happened. This is the eighth one, so you can’t do things anyhow, just when we have this little time, ” he said in Twi.

“If the EC continues to act like Jack Toronto, like they are the Champion Arthur, and continue to ignore everybody’s plea then we have a problem, ” he added.

The main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), and other political parties are against the compilation of a new voter register.

The parties, against the new register, have taken to the streets of Tamale, Kumasi and Accra to demonstrate against it.
