Voter roll: 30,462 registrations on ice as Greater Accra tops challenge cases

The Greater Accra Region topped in the number of people challenged at the end of the last phase of the voter registration exercise.

According to provisional figures, a total of 16,663,669 had been registered by Thursday, August 6, which the Electoral Commission (EC) said had exceeded their target.

This excludes 30,462 who have their cards on ice as their eligibility has been challenged during the process.

EC panels across the country are reviewing the cases to either validate or reject the qualification of the applicants.

Greater Accra and Ashanti leads the pack in nominal terms, before adjustment for population size in the regions.

At least 5,302 were challenged out of the total in the Greater Accra Region. This represents 0.15% of the regional registered total and 0.0318% of the national registered total.

Following in the pack was the Ashanti Region with 3,922 challenged cases which forms 0.13% of the regional registered figures and 0.0235% of the registered total cases in Ghana.

Deputy EC Chair in charge of Corporate Services,Dr Bossman Asare, indicated that when the figures are adjusted the situation is different.

“However, in real terms, when the numbers are adjusted, for the total registered per region. The leading regions with most challenged cases are Oti (0.49%), Ahafo (0.37%) Volta (0.36%), Bono (0.31%), Western North (0.29%) and Savannah (0.29%).

He raised concerns that agents of political parties intentionally challenge the registration of people in their opponent’s strongholds.

He, however, called on parties to educate agents to desist from the deliberate act as the EC organises and two-day mop-up exercise.
