The Ghana Police Service has warned the public against acts of violence at voter registration centres during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The police condemned previous occurrences at registration centres in Cape Coast, Central Region; Kukuom, Ahafo Region; and Adugyama, Ashanti Region.

In a press release signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the service reminded the public that the registration exercise is a civic responsibility that must be attended to in a civil manner.

“It is in this regard that we would like to caution the public to exercise maximum restraint and act in accordance with the laws governing the registration process.

The statement said, “Police will not tolerate any disregard of the law, and any persons who engage in such acts shall be dealt with accordingly.”

The police added that they have already made several arrests as investigations continue.

The latest was the arrest of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi South, Alhaji Collins Dauda, for his alleged involvement in the disturbances at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region.

The police said their officers are in pursuit of other suspects in connection with the incident.

One person sustained injuries during the disturbance and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

In another incident, the Cape Coast North constituency was marked with fear on May 9, 2024, as some men allegedly fired gunshots at the scene.

It is reported that the gunshots were fired by thugs guarding the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Horace Ekow Ewusi.

The multiple shots at the registration centre in the early morning were intended to discourage the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) from registering a group of people they bussed from a different location to the registration centre.

In the Western Region, police busted Bernard Afful, the Mpohor deputy constituency secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), for registering pho are under 18.

Afful, 59, was arrested together with Rojer Miller, 33, proprietor of Voice of Christ Preparatory School in Mpohor, who assisted the NDC deputy constituency secretary in the illegal act.
