Police have arrested two foreign nationals who attempted to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise at Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region.

On Thursday, May 16, 2024, two individuals, identified as Nigerians failed to convince the Electoral Commission (EC) officers and the police about their presence at the centre.

This led to their arrest and subsequent transportation to the Asokore Mampong Police Station for interrogation.

Officers at the registration centre also identified six instances of double registration of the 2,304 successfully registered since the exercise began.

Meanwhile, the District Officer of the EC, Angela Afriyie Osei, cautioned individuals who do not qualify to participate in the registration exercise to refrain from attempts to register.

More than a week into the exercise, which is expected to last 21 days, several violent incidents, attempted double registration, and alleged registration of minors have characterised the process.

This has led to the arrest of about 10 persons, including a member of parliament since the limited voter registration exercise began on May 7.

The Ghana Police Service has also interdicted three officers over some disturbances at one of the registration centres.

The service has since warned the public against violations at voter registration centres.

In a statement, they said, “Police will not tolerate any disregard of the law, and any persons who engage in such acts shall be dealt with accordingly.”

Ghanaians who have attained age 18 and other adult citizens who do not have voter identification cards can participate in the exercise to enable them to vote in the presidential and parliamentary elections later this year.

The EC intends to submit the provisional voter register to the political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, and mount an exhibition of the voter register between July 15 and 24, 2024.

The final voter register will be submitted to the political parties between August 30 and September 5, 2024.
