Voter Registration: Man arrested for attempted double registration
A man has been arrested in New Juaben South in the Eastern Region for attempting to register twice in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
The suspect reportedly participated in the September 2023 exercise but attempted to re-register at the Electoral Commission (EC) district office on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
However, the system flagged him, leading to his immediate arrest.
He disclosed to the police that he was seeking a replacement for his lost voter ID card.
The suspect is in police custody, assisting with investigations.
Following the incident, the Municipal EC Director, Kofi Asante Owusu, urged the public to refrain from attempting double registration and registration of minors, as the biometric system would detect such illegality.
He said the EC would provide opportunities for lost voter ID card replacements and advised people not to attempt re-registering.
In a related development, the registration exercise was temporarily halted due to network issues.
The disruption occurred around 10:30 am after registering about 59 applicants in the morning.
As of 1:00 pm, the network had not been restored.
The arrested individuals are Abass Abukari, George Vinor, and Abdul Karim.
According to the police, the suspects were involved in a physical altercation, which resulted in a temporary disturbance at the Tepa Electoral Commission office.
The police said the suspects were in custody, aiding an ongoing investigation.
They further assured that calm had been restored, allowing the registration process to resume without further incident.
The Electoral Commission (EC) limited voter registration, which commenced on May 7, was rocked by challenges, preventing several people from participating on the first day.
Reports from various centres suggested a network breakdown, which prevented many from completing the registration process.
However, the EC implemented measures to ensure the continuation of the process.
