Convener of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the recent protests organised by the group in Accra.
Barker-Vormawor was taken into custody on Monday, September 23, 2024, for his alleged involvement in unlawful acts during the group’s demonstration on September 21-22.
The protests, which resulted in roadblocks and the obstruction of traffic at key intersections, led to heightened tensions between the demonstrators and law enforcement.
Prior to his arrest, the Ghana Police Service had declared a manhunt for Barker-Vormawor, urging the public to provide any information that could lead to his capture.
The police emphasised their commitment to apprehending individuals who disrupt public peace and violate the law.
However, Barker-Vormawor refuted the police’s claim of a manhunt, stating that he was not in hiding and had been available for questioning.
He criticised the police’s approach, asserting that their actions were an attempt to intimidate and silence activists.
Meanwhile, 42 persons have been arrested at Sunday’s protest and are expected to be put before the court.

The third day of the protest today, Monday, was uneventful as the streets were almost empty despite heavy police presence.
Two protestors who turned up with placards were arrested.
The two men had been standing on the pavement near the 37 Lorry Station for over an hour before boldly stepping forward to stand directly in front of the police, holding their placards and voicing their concerns.
Their placards carried messages opposing illegal mining, a key issue driving the protest.
The men declared, “You can arrest more of us, but even if only two of us remain, we will stand up against illegal mining.”
Their act of defiance led to their immediate arrest, raising the total number of detained protesters over the three days to 44.
