Volta Regional Minister Condemns South Tongu DCE Over Locked Relief Items

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, has reprimanded the South Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE), Seth Agbi, for locking up relief items intended for the Akosombo Dam spillage victims.

In an interview, the DCE revealed that over the past few weeks, the assembly had kept relief items intended for the victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.

According to him, all efforts to transport them to the victims had been unsuccessful due to the inability to raise funds for transportation.

But the Volta regional minister condemned the DCE’s comments, stating that he should have known better.

“The first thing I did yesterday was to reprimand him,” Mr Letsa stated on CitiNews.

“I am in discussions with the appointing authorities to see what next happens, whether a warning or something else,” he continued, hinting at the possibility of further disciplinary measures.

The DCE’s decision to lock up the relief items sparked outrage among the public, with many calling for his dismissal.

Meanwhile, the Deputy NaDMO Director, Seji Amedonu, has said the claims made by the DCE were not true and did not reflect the reality on the ground.

“I saw the video on social media and was very surprised because that is not the case. We have been diligent in distributing the relief items, and nothing has been done on the DCE’s blind side as the chairman of the disaster management committee.

“But because this disaster has caught the national attention, most of the responses are being coordinated at the national level,” he said.

Mr Amedonu questioned why Mr Agbi sought to create the impression that the items were being left to rot despite his admission in the video that GH₵20,000 had been made available.

The NaDMO Director insisted that, as of the time the video went viral, distribution of the relief items was ongoing in the district.
