The Volta Region has been selected to host Ghana’s 66th Independence Day National Celebrations.
Mr Lord Commey, Director of Operations at the Office of the President, made this known when he led members of the National Planning Committee for the event to inform traditional authorities of the decision on Friday, January 20.
He said the president chose the region as the host of the national annual celebration in line with his personal commitment to rotate the event across regions to enhance national unity.
The team was led by Mr Divine Bosson, Ho Municipal Chief Executive, to call on the Asogli Traditional Council.
“The president has sent us to inform you of his decision to honour the people of Volta by getting the region to host the 66th anniversary of Ghana’s independence. The independence square alone cannot continue to host this key celebration of Ghana’s freedom. He has decided this year that it is the turn of the Volta Region –the oxygen city of Ghana,” Mr Commey announced.
He said the essence of the meeting was to seek the support of local stakeholders, particularly traditional authorities, on the celebration and that their input would be crucial to ensuring the event becomes a “full display of a national character.”
Mr Commey, who is Chairman of the National Independence Day Celebration Planning Committee, also cited the gains of the event to the local economy.
Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, Warlord of the Asogli State, said, “it is an honour to be informed of this event in Volta and that it would be taking place on our land.”
The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC), Togbe Teprehodo IV, also thanked President Akufo-Addo for choosing the region for the celebration.
He gave an assurance that the VRHC would throw its full support behind the celebration and make it an unmatched event in the history of the country.
The venue of the event will be the 5,000-capacity Ho Youth Resource Centre at Adaklu Tsrefe.
President Akufo-Addo is expected to take part in the celebration, which will feature air shows, spectacular military drills, cultural displays and a parade by contingents from the various security agencies and selected schools.
Ghana’s 65th independence day celebration was held at the Central Regional Capital, Cape Coast.
