An election for a Presiding Member (PM) at the Yendi Municipal Assembly turned into a free-for-all fight for members of the assembly.

The fight started over the recounting of votes during their fifth attempt to elect a PM on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

During the counting of the votes, one member raised concerns over the process and requested a recount.

However, the request turned into a disagreement between the Assembly Members.

This quickly escalated into a brawl.

The assembly quickly turned chaotic with electoral materials being vandalised, with blows and objects flying from all angles.

This forced the Municipal Chief Executive for Yendi, Ahmed Yussuf Abubakar, officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) and some staff of the assembly who were supervising the exercise to run for their lives.

It took the intervention of the police to calm the situation.

The election was between Yakubu Fuseini and Alhassan Inusah Achiri.

They failed to obtain the required two-thirds of the total votes cast of 44.

Fuseini got 22 votes, Achiri had 21 votes and there was one rejected ballot.
