Video: Two feared dead after tipper truck crashes into Tema Motorway toll booth
Two toll booth attendants on the Tema-Motorway are feared dead after a tipper-truck crashed into their booths.
The unfortunate incident is believed to have occurred around 7:45 am on Monday, July 12.
The cause of the accident is unclear, but reports suggest that the tipper truck driver dozed off at a point.
Other eyewitnesses said the brake of the truck with registration number GG 3542-20 failed.
The vehicle, which was loaded with sand, hit one of the cleaners of the toll booth and ran over his legs.
The victim, identified as Isaac Koomson, is said to have hearing and speech impairment.
The vehicle could not stop and proceeded to hit the back of a salon vehicle that had stopped to pay a toll.
The truck halted only after it drove into the toll booth, destroying it completely.
In a viral video, people were seen massing up at the scene in an attempt to rescue the victims who appeared to have been trapped.
Colleague attendants were seen wailing, uncertain of the condition of their friends.
The driver of the tipper truck and occupants of the salon vehicle who have been severely injured were taken to the Tema General Hospital.
The truck has since been towed from the accident scene.
An eyewitness said, “I was on the Spintex-roadside, but few meters away from the toll booth, I saw the tipper driver rushing to the booth at the Tema side. The rate at which he was speeding showed that something was definitely wrong. Either his brake had failed, or he was an inexperienced driver.”
Meanwhile, the Tema Regional MTTD Commander Chief Superintendent William Asante said the police is currently investigating the incident to determine the actual cause of the accident.
