[VIDEO] Police probe shocking attacks on Ursula’s office
The Ghana Police Service has initiated a probe into a brazen attack on the office and residence of the Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, on Monday, December 9, 2024.
About a dozen men reportedly stormed the premises, causing significant damage and stealing several items, including a branded Nissan Hardbody vehicle, three brand-new motorcycles, a 32-inch Samsung TV, a printer, mobile phones, food supplies, two stabilisers, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The attackers also vandalised CCTV cameras, barbed wire, and the office door.
In a statement, the police confirmed that a crime scene management team had examined the location and efforts to track down the suspects were underway.
“Currently, a targeted intelligence-led operation is ongoing to get the suspects arrested to face justice, and we assure the public that we will get them,” the statement read.
Post-Election Tensions Intensify
The attack comes amidst heightened tension following Ghana’s 2024 general elections. Although the police have not linked the incident to the post-election unrest, it adds to the volatile climate.
In a related development, angry youth in Damongo set the Electoral Commission’s office ablaze, protesting delays in announcing results.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), recently lost her parliamentary seat for Ablekuma West to Rev. Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDC candidate won with 31,866 votes, while Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful garnered 26,575.
Ongoing Security Measures
Meanwhile, the police have bolstered security at Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s office and residence to ensure her safety.
Prior to the attack, authorities had arrested 89 individuals across the country in connection with election-related offences, including vandalism, looting, and property destruction.
The police have also urged citizens to remain peaceful and avoid unlawful actions as the nation transitions to a new administration.
“Meanwhile, the police leadership is in contact with her, and security at her office and residence has been beefed up to ensure her safety,” the statement concluded.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to justice and public safety, emphasising the need for calm during this critical period.
