Parliament has reconvened today, November 7, 2024, to proceed with pending government businesses.
Today’s sitting follows the suspension of the House by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, on October 22, 2024, due to a lack of quorum to conduct business.
This whole saga in Parliament commenced when the Speaker declared four parliamentary seats vacant due to the affected legislators’ decision to cross carpet ahead of the upcoming elections.
Speaker Bagbin declared the four parliamentary seats vacant on October 17, reducing the numbers of the NPP legislators and favouring the NDC.
The dispute between the NPP and the NDC is about who occupies the majority position in Parliament.
At the sitting, the NDC MPs occupied the Majority position meant for the NPP MPs and as a result, the NPP MPs refused to attend the proceedings for today.
This resulted in the suspension of today’s sitting indefinitely by the Speaker of Parliament once again.
Despite the contention between the two parties in Parliament, there are numerous issues to tackle in the Chamber.
The legislators are expected to work with key government businesses, such as 2025 First Quarter Budget Approval, L.I. revoking Mining in Forest Reserves, Approval of $250 million Ghana Financial Stability Fund, Approval of $250 million Ghana Energy Sector Loan, Approval of $350 million worth of tax waivers, and Approval of 2 Supreme Court nominees.
