(Video) Man battling for his life after falling off from Tamale Interchange
A middle-aged man is battling for his life after he fell off from the newly commissioned Tamale Interchange in the Northern Region.
The reason for his action has not been immediately established.
However, those present at the scene believe that he attempted to commit suicide.
In a viral video sighted online, the man, who many suspects to be mentally unstable, is seen jumping from a height of the interchange amidst screams from residents and landing on the floor.
According to an eyewitness, the victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Tamale Central Hospital for treatment.
In April this year, the Northern Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Chief Superintendent Mahmud Yussif, warned residents of the Tamale Metropolis and its environs that the newly constructed Tamale Interchange is not pedestrian-friendly.
According to him, residents will be risking their lives should they refuse to desist from using the overpass of the interchange.
“Looking at the nature of the project it is pedestrian-unfriendly and completely not meant for pedestrians; only for vehicles. Even our motorbikes are not allowed to use it. It was constructed to ease traffic in the central business district,” he said.
Residents raised concerns about how pedestrians, especially schoolchildren, have turned the dual-carriage interchange into a walkway and playground.
According to residents, although members of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) taskforce are sometimes deployed to the interchange and surrounding areas to ensure order, the situation returns immediately they close from work.
