(VIDEO) Helicopter airlifts badly injured soldiers in Akufo-Addo’s convoy accident

Soldiers and other close protection officers of President Akufo-Addo’s security detail left in critical condition after a fatal accident on Sunday have been evacuated by a military aircraft to Accra.

The officers sustained varying degrees of injuries after the president’s convoy was involved in an accident on the Bunso-Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway on May 19.

The president’s convoy was returning from Kumasi after the funeral of the late MP for Ejisu and former deputy finance minister Dr John Kumah, which was held over the weekend.

According to reports, the convoy was crossed by a KIA Rhino truck, resulting in a collision that claimed the life of one Kwesi Atta, a driver in the presidential fleet.

Three soldiers who got injured were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital Emergency Center for medical treatment in an ambulance, but the degree of injuries required transfer for further treatment.

A few hours after the accident, a chopper was spotted at the Suhum Senior High Technical School Park, conveying the wounded victims from an ambulance to Accra.

A statement released by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, said several vehicles in the convoy were damaged entirely.

However, President Nana Akufo-Addo is “safe and unharmed” as “he travelled to Accra via military aircraft”.

The presidency extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured persons a speedy recovery.
