(VIDEO) Ghana marks 77th anniversary of 28th February crossroads shooting
Ghana has commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Christiansborg Crossroads Shooting Incident—a significant moment in the nation’s struggle for independence.
The event was held at the Nationalism Park in Accra on Friday, February 28, 2025.
The solemn event saw veteran military personnel parading in honour of three fallen ex-servicemen, Sergeant Cornelius Adjetey, Corporal Patrick Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, who were shot and killed by British colonial forces on February 28, 1948.
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang graced the occasion, highlighting the importance of remembering those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.
The three ex-servicemen, who had fought for the British during World War II, were marching peacefully to the Christiansborg Castle, then the seat of government, to demand their unpaid war benefits.
However, they were met with gunfire at the crossroad leading to the castle, resulting in their tragic deaths.
Their killing triggered widespread protests and riots across the Gold Coast, intensifying the demand for independence and ultimately shaping the nation’s path to self-rule.
This year’s commemoration honoured their sacrifices and recognized the contributions of all Ghanaian ex-servicemen who dedicated their lives to the country.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held at Nationalism Park in Accra, attended by government officials, military personnel, traditional leaders, and veterans.
