A deadly confrontation erupted at the Missiga Immigration Service checkpoint in Bawku on October 9, 2024, between Ghana Police Service personnel and Customs officials.
The clash began when police officers refused to allow customs officials to inspect a Togo-bound truck suspected of carrying smuggled cocoa beans.
Customs personnel insisted on conducting the inspection, leading to a heated standoff that quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire.
The situation spiralled out of control, with bystanders fleeing for safety as the two security agencies exchanged fire for several minutes.
The checkpoint became chaotic and dangerous, raising serious concerns about interagency coordination in protecting Ghana’s borders.
Military officers were eventually called in to de-escalate the situation.
A video of the incident captured the moment a heated verbal argument spiralled into violence, with gunshots ringing out and bystanders having to flee for safety.
