[VIDEO]: Chaotic scenes as Vormawor bolts with police car keys at Democracy Hub demo
The Constitutional Rights and Policy Advisor of Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has been captured in a video turning off the ignition of a police van on the blind side of the police, and bolting after removing the keys.
The police were deployed to vantage points to maintain order following protests by the pressure group Democracy Hub along the 37 Interchange. The vans were there to tow away cars used by the protesters to block the roads, causing gridlock in the area.
During a scuffle on the second day of the protests on Sunday, September 22, Mr Barker-Vormawor, who was unhappy about the action of the police, took matters into his own hands and carried out the act.
In the video, a man is heard shouting, “He has taken the key! Thief, thief! Arrest him, arrest him! He stole the key!”
He was later seen pushing police barricades as other demonstrators continued their resistance in pursuit of drumming home their demands for better governance, improved economic conditions and development to benefit all Ghanaians.
After the chaotic scenes, Mr Barker-Vormawor, took to his Facebook page to explain the reason for his actions.
Meanwhile, police have arrested dozens of the protesters as law enforcement officers embark on efforts to maintain law and order.
In a statement, the police said they were apprehended for engaging “in acts of lawlessness including blocking the road, pushing down police crash barriers and obstructing traffic”.
Meanwhile, “the police are on a manhunt to arrest one of their leaders Oliver Vormawor and others who engaged in some acts of lawlessness at the 37 Intersection”.
“We would like to assure the public that the Police will arrest all the perpetrators involved and bring them to face justice”.
Democracy Hub notified the police about their three-day protests against poor governance and economic woes in the country but they were advised against the demonstrations for security reasons.
The police indicated that any attempts to continue their protest at the 37 Intersection or other unauthorized locations would be met with the “use of all lawful means possible to ensure the free movement of traffic and prevent undue inconvenience to the general public”.
In a related development, Mr Barker-Vormawor responded to the police public notice indicating that he was ready to hand himself over.
