The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Cape Coast Branch (UTAG-UCC), has rejected the University Council’s decision to terminate the appointment of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice-Chancellor.

UTAG-UCC contends that the decision was made unilaterally by the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council and will not be acknowledged.

Prof. Boampong was appointed to a four-year term in June 2020, with effect from August 2020.

His tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious institution officially ended and terminated on July 31, 2024.

Prof. Boampong’s appointment was allegedly extended by two years.

However, a notice signed by the chairman of the university’s governing council, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, indicated that such an extension was null and void.

The notice confirmed the end of Prof Boampong’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor.

In response, the UTAG-UCC Branch in a press statement argued that the termination of Prof Boampong’s appointment was improperly executed and should not be accepted.

“The letter from the Council Chair dated 31st July 2024, stating the termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s
renewed term, is improper and without merit. The claims that the renewal breaches the University’s Statutes and the Constitution are unfounded.

“The renewal was conducted with full consideration of all legal and statutory requirements. On this basis, the action of the Council Chair is arbitrary, capricious, and devoid of any legal justification. We reject it outrightly.”
