UTAG-KNUST throws support for removal of GTEC boss and deputy

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-KNUST) has expressed its support for the demands regarding the dismissal of Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the Director-General, and Prof. Augustine Ocloo, the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

This decision was made following an Executive Emergency Meeting held on Monday, January 26, 2026, during which the branch decided to align itself with a similar request made by the University of Ghana branch of UTAG on January 19, 2026.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 27, UTAG-KNUST condemned the leadership of GTEC, asserting that the Commission has become a “tool for personal vindictiveness” and has not succeeded in enhancing standards in Ghana’s public universities.

The statement cited several issues, such as:

  • Poor student-lecturer ratios (STR), which continue to deteriorate.
  • Ambiguities in handling post-retirement contracts and office-holding extensions, and leaving faculty in limbo.
  • Lack of guidance to finance directors on whether to remove retired lecturers from payrolls, creating uncertainty on campuses.
  • Laboratories and lecture halls are in need of renovation, retooling, and expansion.

UTAG-KNUST expressed that these shortcomings have rendered university management “helpless” and are obstructing the provision of quality education to students in Ghana.

The association appealed to the Chief of Staff at the Presidency to persuade President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the D-G and DD-G due to incompetence.

UTAG-KNUST further urged the two officials to step down by January 31, 2026, cautioning that additional industrial action could ensue if the issue remains unresolved.
