The Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has temporarily banned the riding of motorbikes in the Binduri District.

This forms part of decisions taken by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) at an emergency meeting held on January 22, 2024, following the renewed killings in Bawku and Binduri Districts.

“Following renewed killings in Bawku and Binduri, the REGSEC decided to review the curfew hours in Bawku from 8:00pm-5:00am to 6:00pm to 6:00am. It also placed a temporary ban on the ridding of motorbikes in the Binduri district,” a press release dated January 29, and signed by Alhaji Abubakari Inusah, Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council said.

“Consequently, the DISEC of the Binduri District Assembly is hereby directed to enforce the directive with effect from the 29th January 2024,” the press release added.

Bawku is once again experiencing conflict following incidents of killings, the recent one being the death of three men, allegedly caused by military officers deployed by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to restore peace in the area.

Although the military has denied any wrongdoing, saying they acted in self-defense, residents are calling for justice over the killing of the young men.

Meanwhile, at least six people were reported dead in a fresh attack in a previous incident in Bawku. In this one, gunmen opened fire on a bus that was en route to a market in Binduri. The victims comprised two males and four females.

The situation continues to put fear in residents as death tolls increase.

Alarmed by the recent attacks, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, urgently called for peace in the area.
