‘Unstoppable’ Minority vows to press on at vetting committee

Minority Leader in Parliament and the Ranking Member on the Appointments Committee, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly repelled what he believes are intimidation tactics, insisting that NPP legislators are unperturbed by the schemes of the NDC.

He is of the view that the NDC legislators are deploying strategies to gag members from his side to prevent thorough scrutiny of ministerial nominees presented to Parliament by President John Dramani Mahama.

His comments follow Thursday’s chaos, which resulted in near fisticuffs and destruction of microphones and furniture at the vetting conference.

The MP for Effutu insists that Parliament is accountable to Ghanaians, and his side will continue to ask as many relevant questions as necessary.

“You are aware that some of the nominees, we don’t even ask them questions. Where we have to ask the relevant questions, we ask. Nothing will stop us from asking the necessary questions,” he said. “NDC is always out to intimidate people. Always bullying. They can call us a micro-minority. They can say whatever they want to say. We’ve been cooperating with them.”

He continued, “Today, we agreed to do three [nominees]. The committee is on a partisan track. Indeed, the clerk is a typical NDC. She agrees with them and then advertises and informs people to come.

“The practice has always been that the chairman and ranking would agree on who will come. Yesterday, there was no agreement. The chairman was with me; no meeting. Then, at 10 pm, they advertised for 10 this morning.”

Mr Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns about the number of nominees to be presented for vetting, which keeps changing.

“My deputy was here. They had a pre-sitting and agreed on three. Later in the afternoon, they said four. Then, again, they said, ‘Oh, let’s compromise on one more.’ We said okay, and they made it five. But just as we finished the three, we realised they had paraded several other nominees, thinking we would boycott. We will not boycott,” he vowed.
