University of Ghana launches inaugural Community Games to promote wellness and unity

The University of Ghana has officially launched its inaugural Community Games, a new initiative designed to promote health, foster community spirit, and encourage personal growth among the university community.

The games will kick off on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium, where eight teams will compete in a football tournament.

The event launch, held in Accra, was attended by university officials, alumni, staff, and students.

Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of Sports and Wellness, described the games as an opportunity to celebrate sports and strengthen community bonds.

“We gather not only to celebrate our shared passion for sports but also to strengthen the bonds of community and friendship that make our university a truly unique and vibrant place,” he said.

The football tournament will feature the following fixtures:

Group A:

– Match 1: College of Humanities vs. University of Ghana Alumni Association
– Match 2: College of Health Science vs. College of Basic & Applied Science

Group B:

– Match 1: College of Education vs. Central Administration
– Match 2: University of Ghana Enterprises Ltd (UGEL) vs. The Union Ghana

Following the group stage, the winners of each group will play to determine the ultimate champion. Each match will last 30 minutes, with 15-minute halves and a 5-minute break. FIFA-certified referees will officiate the games, and in case of a goalless match, the winner will be decided through a penalty shootout.

The University’s Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, in a speech read on her behalf, linked the Community Games to the university’s broader “five for five” strategic plan, focusing on well-being for faculty and staff. “The UG Community Games will provide us with the perfect platform to engage with one another outside the classroom and offices,” the Registrar noted.

Yaw Sakyi, CEO of Rite Sports, who conducted the tournament draw, explained the format, where the winners of each group will face off in the final. He added, “The games are not just a competition but a celebration of teamwork and inclusivity.”

The Community Games reflect the university’s commitment to comprehensive wellness programmes, a goal emphasised in its recent five-year strategic plan. Mrs. Agyei-Mensah encouraged participation, stating, “I encourage everyone to step out of their comfort zone to participate, cheer for your colleagues, and embrace the joy of competition.”

As excitement builds for the event, Dr. Luguterah summed up the event’s purpose: “Let us remember that the true essence of the University of Ghana Community Games lies in participation, connection, and the joy of being part of something greater than ourselves.”

With the games officially launched, the university looks forward to a day filled with sportsmanship, camaraderie, and a celebration of unity within its vibrant community.
