Universities senior staff declare strike effective Sept. 16

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has declared a total nationwide strike, effective Monday, September 16, 2024, due to the government’s failure to address their poor working conditions.

In a statement signed by its National Chairman, George Ansong, the group indicated that the government failed to meet their demands for better service conditions despite reaching an agreement.

The demands include a new rate for vehicle maintenance and related allowances, the release of tier 2 deductions to fund managers since January 2024, and the recalculation of interests on pension allowances from 2010 to 2016.

The association had previously embarked on a strike in January 2024 but suspended it after the government promised to honour their promises.

However, the government has reneged on these commitments, leading to the strike.

All administrative offices, libraries, hospitals, and security facilities on public university campuses will be closed.

The national leadership of the association has directed all member campuses to adhere to the strike directive strictly and will not call off the strike until their demands are met.

“Therefore, it is hereby directed that all member campuses adhere to this directive strictly,” the statement concluded.
