Unidentified gunmen attack cargo truck under military escort

An unfortunate incident unfolded in Missiga in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region on January 16, 2025, as unidentified armed men attacked a cargo truck under military escort.

The assailants ambushed and opened fire on the truck, which was travelling from the border town of Kulungugu to Bawku township.

The unidentified gunmen quickly fled from the scene after committing the crime.

There were no casualties.

The incident comes barely two days after unknown armed men attacked and set a Kia Rhino truck ablaze at Walewale in the North East Region on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

The truck, loaded with bags of vegetables, was en route from Mognori in the Bawku Municipality to Kumasi.

The incident occurred during President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Bawku and Nalerigu, where he was addressing the ongoing chieftaincy conflicts in the region.

These frequent ambush attacks on commercial vehicles are believed to be linked to the chieftaincy conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi factions in the Upper East Region of Bawku.

Meanwhile, military personnel have been deployed to patrol some key areas within the municipality to address the security concerns.
