Unibank collapse: Duffour snubs SIT invitation; insists on court process

Source Starrfm
Founder of defunct Unibank, Dr Kwabena Duffour has turned down an invitation from the Special Investigative Team to assist with investigations into the collapse of the bank.
Starrfm.com.gh reports that the former governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Duffour has asked the head of SIT, COP Edward Tabriri to desist from threats to have him “arrested, detained and hurriedly arraigned before a court” over no -existent and frivolous charges rather follow due process.
Dr Duffour challenger the basis for his invitation by the SIT saying he was not part of management neither was he a board member at the time of the revocation of his bank’s operational license by the Central bank.
According to him, he left the scenes of the bank’s management since 2009 and thus, does not see how relevant he would be in investigations into the collapse of his financial institution.
In August 2018, he filed an injunction application at the High Court challenging the Central bank over the revocation of the operational license of Unibank.

The central bank merged uniBank with other insolvent banks to form the Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited in 2018.

Announcing the consolidation of uniBank along with the other banks on August 1, 2018, the Governor of the BoG, Dr Ernest Addison said reports from the official administrator, KPMG stated that uniBank was balance sheet insolvent.

“Among other things, the bank’s interest income and other sources of income are insufficient to cover the associated cost of funds of underlying borrowings and liabilities, as well as overheads of about GH¢0.31 billion per annum.”

These claims have, however, been challenged by the bank’s directors.

Dr Duffuor and others have since been in court challenging the revocation of the bank’s license.
