Unfulfilled promises behind Ghana’s AFCON trophy drought – Rev Osei Kofi

Ghana football legend, Rev Osei Kofi beleives the country’s failure to end its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy drought is due to failure to honour its promises.

Having won the last AFCON trophy in 1982, the Black Stars have failed to lift the continent’s most prestigious trophy.

Ghana played in the 1992 final but lost on penalty shootouts to Ivory Coast.

In the 2010 and 2015 finals, Ghana lost 1-0 to Egypt before losing on penalty shootouts against Ivory Coast, respectively.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Rev Osei expressed disappointment over the state’s failure to fulfill promises made to the 1982 winning squad, suggesting it may be a spiritual reason behind Ghana’s long AFCON title drought.

“Ghana hasn’t won the AFCON since 1982 because the country has not honoured its promise to us,” the Asante Kotoko legend and also a triple Olympian said.

Meanwhile, after a back-to-back group phase elimination during the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, the woes of the team were compounded after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament after two decades.
