The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the undersea internet cables that developed faults will be fully functional by May 9, 2024.
In its sixth update on the recent network disruption, the NCA said it was monitoring the repair works in collaboration with the Submarine Cable Service Providers (SAT-3, ACE, WACS, and MainOne).
It added that SAT-3 had reported their repair vessel, which set sail from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 19 2024, was expected to reach the vicinity of the fault area on March 19, 2024, and begin repair work immediately.
The NCA said MainOne, WACS, and ACE also reported that they were collaborating and had jointly commissioned a second repair vessel.
The authority stated that ACE is expected to complete works by April 17, 2024; WACS by April 28, 2024; and MainOne by May 9, 2024.
However, it added that the dates are subject to change.
“The general public is reminded to note that these dates are tentative and that the Authority will issue an update in the event of new developments,” it said.
This followed disruptions in internet connection in Ghana and other African countries on March 14, 2024, due to cuts in undersea fibre optic cables, which are critical to internet connectivity.
Meanwhile, mobile network operators (MNOs) such as MTN and Telecel have acquired alternative capacities and fully restored internet connectivity.
