UG’s 20% hall fee hike sparks backlash

The University of Ghana’s decision to increase traditional hall fees by 20% for the 2024/2025 academic year has triggered widespread criticism from students and parents.

Many argue that the hike, which raises Residential Facility User Fees (RFUF) to GHS 3,000 annually for halls like Volta, Commonwealth, Mensah Sarbah, and Legon, is unjustifiable given Ghana’s current economic challenges.

According to the University’s Public Affairs Directorate, the increment, approved by the University Council, is intended to cover rising utility costs, renovations, and maintenance.

Dr. Margaret Amankwah-Poku, Chair of the Committee of Heads of Halls, explained that the fee adjustment is necessary to maintain students’ conducive living conditions.

“Out of what they pay, the hall gets 70%, and 30% goes to the university. Each student is paying GHS 9 per day and GHS 65 a week. With this, we have to clean washrooms, maintain the facilities, and provide for students’ welfare.

“Even with what they are paying now, it’s not enough, and we have to supplement it with internally generated funds,” she stated.

She assured parents and students that the decision was not taken lightly and urged them to understand the financial realities behind the increase.

“The monies we are taking now are not enough to run the halls effectively. We even solicit donations and sponsorships for support. Parents and students should bear with us as we aim to ensure they enjoy their stay.”

Despite these explanations, students and parents continue to express mixed reactions. Some parents who spoke to reporters criticized the fee hike.

“Things are expensive, and money is already a problem. Even the previous fees were manageable, but this increment worsens the situation.”

Others were more understanding: “This is my first time experiencing this. Considering how the cost of everything has risen, I think the increment is normal.”
