UG suspends all social gatherings as COVID-19 cases rise
The University of Ghana has announced the immediate suspension of all social gatherings on campus due to a recent increase in COVID-19 cases.
This decision follows confirmation, on Monday, June 23, of a rise in COVID-19 cases within the university community, leading officials to call for immediate precautionary measures.
In a statement released on Thursday, June 26, the university’s health directorate revealed that both suspected and confirmed cases have been identified on campus, necessitating a reactivation of health protocols and increased vigilance.
The statement urged, “All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and community spread”.
Additionally, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has instructed all student bodies, such as the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and various departmental and school associations, to suspend all scheduled events and activities until further notice.
Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, emphasised that this precautionary measure is aimed at protecting the health and safety of the university community.
“These measures have become necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of the University community,” the notice stated.
University authorities have urged students and campus organisations to comply fully with this directive and contribute to efforts aimed at containing the spread of the virus on campus.
