UG investigates death of level 100 student
The University of Ghana (UG) has commenced a probe into the death of a level 100 student on Saturday, January 29, 2022.
The student, identified as Nicholas Atteh, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Administration programme, died around 4: 40 pm in the evening while using the swimming pool at the University’s Sports Directorate.
University authorities have subsequently taken steps to collaborate with the police to establish the cause of death.
“We assure members of the university community and the bereaved family that management is working together with the police and the University Health Services to investigate the unfortunate incident,” a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah, said.
The release added that the body was deposited at the University Hospital, and the bereaved family was notified.
“Management mourns his tragic loss and sends deepest condolences to his family and friends, on behalf of the entire University community,” the release added.
Meanwhile, the university’s Students Representative Council (SRC) has also sent a message to the student community and the bereaved family.
Student deaths over the years
Student deaths have been worrying in the past years.
Several tragic incidents have occurred in the major public universities leading to the demise of precious souls.
On March 28, 2021, three KNUST students were killed in two separate accidents. Two students died in a road accident after their private car rammed into a tree in an attempt to negotiate a curve on campus.
In another incident on the same day, a level 100 student fell unconscious while climbing the staircase of the Unity Hall.
He slipped when he got to the first floor and hit his head against the wall after toppling over.
On August 19, 2021, a 25-year-old KNUST student was found dead by his mother.
Again, on September 8, 2021, a final year student of the University of Ghana, Daniel Anane Wadie, died at the University Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness.
