Two victims badly injured in Adum fire incident

The Head of Public Relations at the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), DO II Desmond Ackah, has disclosed that two persons, a firefighter and a civilian, sustained injuries in the fire outbreak incident at Adum, located within the Central Business District of Kumasi.

Mr. Ackah explained that the firefighter was injured while attempting to save a property, and debris fell on the civilian’s head while salvaging some goods.

According to Mr. Ackah, they were quickly rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“The unfortunate news is that one of our men got injured while salvaging some property, and another civilian was also injured. Debris fell on his head, and he was rushed to the hospital. I understand they are both in stable condition,” he noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on JoyNews.

In a positive development, Ackah confirmed that the fire has been brought under control. The GNFS personnel are now addressing the remaining pockets of fire to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

He urged the public to remain calm, assuring them that there is no cause for alarm.

“We have fought tremendously well to bring this fire under control. What it means is that the situation is out of danger, there is no cause for alarm now. What we are currently doing is what we term overhaul, just to get to the various pockets of fire to ensure that we extinguish the fire totally,” he added.

The massive fire at Adum Market resulted in extensive damage to numerous shops and properties.

The blaze erupted in the early hours of Friday, March 21, and quickly spread to nearby establishments, leading to considerable losses for local business owners.

Despite warnings from police and firefighters, some shopkeepers attempted to recover their goods in the face of the raging fire.

Meanwhile, President John Mahama has assured that the affected persons will be cushioned in this difficult moment.

“I have directed NADMO to assist affected traders that is in the interim. We will also discuss with the Chief of Staff together with the Ashanti Regional Minister to also support the traders,” he assured.
