Two sentenced to 15 years each for stealing GH¢ 50, phones among others

Two persons have been sentenced to 15 years each for robbery by the Yendi Circuit Court.

The convicts, a 29-year-old poultry farmer and herdsman in the Bono Region Karim Salifu and a 30-year-old herdsman at Salinkpan near Yendi, Karim Issaka, are said to have robbed a man of his motorbike and five mobile phones on July 29, 2021.

They also robbed the man of an amount of GH¢50.00 at gunpoint that same day at Salnayili in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region.

The victim immediately raised an alarm, and the suspects were traced and arrested at Nakpache near Yendi. Police retrieved the motorbike and some other valuables stolen.

It was the view of the court that the sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who may be planning to tow that same path as robbery cases continue to rise across the country.

The two have been whisked away to the Gambaga Prison in the North East Region.

Robbery cases on the rise

The country has recently recorded a rise in daylight robberies in the country’s capital, Accra and other parts of the country.

From January to the end of October 2019, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) early warning system records captured 80 armed robbery cases in Ghana.

Fast forward to June 9, 2021, a man was shot in the stomach in a daylight robbery by two armed men at Pigfarm.

He was pronounced dead 24 hours after being treated at the 37 Military Hospital.

That same day, two armed men also broke into a forex bureau near Honeysuckle in Osu and made away with an undisclosed amount of money.

The culprits in these two incidents are currently at large.

On June 11, an unidentified man in an attempted robbery case attacked the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder with registration number GE-8088-11 on the GIMPA- Fiesta Royale road.

He threw a big stone at the vehicle, smashing its glass door and tried to escape into a nearby bush. But he was arrested by the Police after the victim drew the Police’s attention.

On June 14, three armed robbers on a motorcycle trailed a Mon-Tran bullion van and robbed occupants of the cash in the van –two were left dead at Adedenkpo in Jamestown.

This is foolish reportage. The robbers robbed a man of his motorbike, five cell phones and GHC50 at gunpoint. This is armed robbery and should carry a death sentence. I don’t know the reporter’s motivation for twisting the details of the case.
