Two children have lost their lives in a fire that engulfed their room in Agona Afamanso in the Ashanti Region.
The tragedy occurred around 8:00 pm on Monday, December 4, while the children were asleep.
The Assemblyman for the area, Martin Mensah, confirmed the incident.
According to the Assemblyman, the children’s 40-year-old guardian had stepped out momentarily when the fire broke out.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
However, Mr Mensah suspects the presence of a candle in the room due to the absence of electricity.
“The boy was burnt beyond recognition, and from where we retrieved the body, it appeared he tried to escape but got trapped,” Mr Mensah recounted.
He added that the swift intervention of bystanders prevented further tragedy, as the guardian might have attempted to rescue the children.
Mr Mensah further said that the lack of operational firefighting equipment at the Agona Fire Station posed a challenge, highlighting a dysfunctional fire tender.
The devastated community mourns the loss of the young lives as investigations into the incident continue.
