Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry and Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, Abena Osei-Asare, has said that the true test of Ghana’s economic management will come after the country completes its current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

Her comments come amid recent improvements in key economic indicators, including growth and inflation.

In an interview, Osei-Asare emphasised the importance of maintaining policy discipline and sustaining current reforms to ensure long-term economic stability.

“Clearly, they are fast-tracking the reforms we put in place, and I am pleased to see these yielding results. The key is to sustain them beyond the IMF programme,” she said.

She added, “The real question is whether, after the IMF programme, the government will have built buffers and systems to maintain these gains. For now, I am encouraged by their efforts, but the ultimate test will be when Ghana no longer relies on IMF support”.

Ghana’s three-year, $3 billion IMF Extended Credit Facility, approved in May 2023, is set to conclude in 2026.

The programme was aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, rebuilding foreign reserves, and putting public debt on a sustainable path after the country’s most severe economic crisis in decades.
