Truck runs over three miners in the Central Region
A mining truck reportedly belonging to the Ghana Bauxite Company at Awaso in the Western Region ran over three miners at Dunkwa Ayamfuri in the Central Region, killing them instantly.
The miners were en route to work on the morning of Tuesday, June 8.
The incident, according to reports, happened in the early hours of the day between the Dunkwa Ayamfuri Cemetery and a fuel station opposite the cemetery.
The three miners have been identified as Akwasi Bacha, King Medals, and Frank, and they are believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35 years of age.
The assembly member of the area, Kwabena Enin Castro, said the miners were in a salon car driving opposite the mining truck which was Takoradi-bound. Other reports indicate the car that was carrying the deceased unsuccessfully tried to overtake another vehicle only to end up in a head-on-head collision with the truck.
“A mining truck belonging to Awaso Bauxite en route to Takoradi run over a private vehicle with three miners onboard and killed them all instantly” he explained to Accra-based Starr FM,
According to Castro, the deceased were workers of Rock Sure, a subcontractor for Perseus Mining Company.
Police are yet to establish the cause of the accident but the assembly member suspects reckless driving.
The dead bodies have been deposited at the Dunkwa On-Offin mortuary for autopsy and preservation meanwhile the Police have arrested the driver of the mining truck to assist in investigations.
In a related development, a special report by The Ghana Report has concluded Ghanaians have been experiencing vehicular accidents that result in the loss of an average of eight lives, every day this year.
Road traffic fatalities seem to be on the growth, with 1,250 lives lost for the first five months of 2021. This represents a 26.32% increase over the same period in 2020, with the trend suggesting a record high annual figure by the end of 2021.
Persons who survived the crashes but sustained various injuries for the period were 1, 309, a rise of 26.72%.
After pushing the annual road fatalities to the highest in the last 30 years in 2020, motorcycle accidents contributed to 538 road fatalities over the period.
