Transport fares reduced by 15.3% effective Monday

Commuters can heave a sigh of relief ahead of Christmas as transport operators slash fares by 15.3% effective Monday, December 19.

The downward review of transport fares was due to massive reductions in fuel prices by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for consecutive periods at the pumps.

The new fares were communicated in a press statement on Friday, December 16, jointly signed by the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Godfred Abulbire and the General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah.

They made the announcement after discussions with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport.

“Following the negotiations and in consideration with the plight of drivers, commuters and the general public, we have resolved to reduce the existing transport fares by 15.3%,” the statement explained.

“With the recent reductions in the prices of petroleum products, it became necessary to engage stakeholders to give consideration to a review of the fares in line with the Administrative Instrument”.

“Consequently, series of negotiation meetings were held with the stakeholders to agree on an acceptable level of fare reduction commensurate with the current fuel prices,” the transport operators said.

Meanwhile, fuel prices at the pumps have decreased by a huge margin in the second pricing window of the month, beginning December 16.

Major OMCs in the country have started reducing the prices of petroleum products at the stations.

Market leader GOIL has reduced the price of petrol to GH¢13.40 per litre from the previous GH¢15.80, representing more than a GH¢2 drop from its previous price, translating into about a 15% decrease.

Diesel is also going for GH¢16.10 per litre from the previous GH₵18.86.

TotalEnergies is also selling petrol for GH¢13.40 per litre, while diesel is going for GH¢15.85 per litre.

The decrease in prices translates to about a 15% per cent drop in both petrol and diesel.
