Torkonoo sues to stop Baffoe-Bonnie’s vetting and appointment as CJ
Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo is challenging the vetting and appointment of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice
This comes just days before the Appointments Committee of Parliament is scheduled to vet Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, whom President John Mahama nominated to replace Justice Torkonoo following her removal from office.
Justice Torkonoo’s legal action at the High Court is seeking to quash all proceedings of the Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang Committee established under Article 146 to consider petitions for her removal.
President Mahama removed Justice Torkonoo from office on September 1, 2025, based on the findings of a constitutionally mandated inquiry under Article 146.
The committee, formed in consultation with the Council of State, found her guilty of misconduct and misbehaviour, including the alleged misuse of public funds, and recommended her removal.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following Justice Torkonoo’s suspension.
He was formally nominated in September to take over the role permanently.
The legal battle now casts a shadow over the nomination process and could delay the appointment of a new Chief Justice.
