Workers of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) have expressed optimism over the return of President John Dramani Mahama, confident that he will honour his commitment to revitalise the struggling refinery.
Under the banner of the Executives and Members of the Union of Industry, Commerce, and Finance Workers (UNICOF) TOR Branch, the workers emphasised TOR’s significance as a vital national asset.
They believe that with strategic investments and government support, the refinery can play a central role in stabilising Ghana’s economy, ensuring fuel security, and generating employment.
Reflecting on President Mahama’s first term, the workers commended his past efforts to restore TOR, expressing hope that his leadership would bring even greater strides in the refinery’s recovery during his second term.
They pledged their full support and cooperation to the government in achieving this goal.
However, the workers cautioned against potential distractions that could hinder TOR’s progress.
They specifically called on the government to focus on the refinery’s vision and avoid influence from what they termed “discredited and criminal-minded” individuals who have historically undermined TOR’s operations.
The workers further alleged that a deliberate campaign by certain parties has sought to discredit TOR, turning it into little more than a storage facility.
They criticised the misuse of the “gold for oil” policy, arguing that instead of benefiting the energy sector, it has been exploited by some to destabilise the refinery and deter potential investors.
Despite these challenges, the workers remain hopeful, urging the government to prioritise TOR’s revival and restore its reputation as a cornerstone of Ghana’s energy sector.
