Violence-prone Bimbilla, a town in the North East region has erupted into conflict over the organisation of the annual Damba festival.

A section of the Damba celebrants clashes with security personnel Thursday night ahead of the grand celebrated scheduled for Saturday.

Multiple sources say, at least three were left injured and are receiving medical attention. Gory photos show deep bloody wound in the arm of one of the victims while a woman is also seen in a blood-soaked T-Shirt.

The tensions began after members of the Nakpaa Naa royal family tried to organise the ceremony to mark the festival said to mark the birth of Islamic prophet Muhammad.

The royal family was stopped by a joint police and military team. But it did not stop angry locals from burning car tyres and throwing projectiles.

Sporadic shooting believed to be from both sides followed.

Sources say the Nakpaa Naa family was stopped because the rightful traditional authority to organise the festival is the Dasana Andani family.

This royal family was declared the rightful rulers of Bimbilla by the Supreme Court decision in May 2018.

This judgement endorsed that of the National House of Chiefs and the Northern Regional House of chiefs. It was to mark more than 15 years of protracted conflict.

But tension still simmers between the two gates and with the Damba festival approaching, the disagreements played out again.

The overlord of Gonjaland Yagbowura, Tuntumba Bore Essa I, in consultation with the Council of Elders has placed a ban on the celebration of the Damba festival in the Bole traditional area in the North East Region.

Other towns in the North-East and Upper West regions are planning to mark the annual occasion.

At the time of this report, the Northern regional Security Council was in a meeting over the fresh outbreak of violence.

Only last August, government accepted a proposal from the Awomefia of the Anlo state, Togbe Sri II to lead mediation efforts between the two families.

The Dasana Andani family, a faction in the dispute however rejected the mediation efforts.
