The Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery has denied reports that some individuals are plotting to depose the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
This comes after portions of an audio purported to be a conversation between a senior member of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) and a police commissioner were leaked to the public.
The unidentified persons were allegedly plotting to remove the current IGP from office ahead of the 2024 elections due to his reluctance to align the police force’s activities with the interests of the ruling party.
They also expressed reservations about his leadership style and rumoured ties to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
But speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, July 11, Mr. Dery said that no bigwig in the government is making any plot to remove Dr Dampare as widely circulated.
“There is no plot to remove anybody. I can assure you that I serve a president who is committed and has respect for human rights. Under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo we will make sure that 2024 is peaceful.
“One thing to be sure, 2024 will not be a violent election by anybody and no one will want to thwart the will of the people. If you vote us in, you vote us in, if you vote us out, you vote us out,” he said.
Meanwhile, a Security Analyst, Mr Adib Saani says the authorities should not be in a hurry to rubbish the audio.
He said this is not the first time such alleged plots have come out to the public domain and so a thorough investigation should be carried out into the matter.
Mr. Saani recommended that in an era of deep fakes, modern technological tools should be employed in the investigation to ascertain the authenticity of the audio.
