The suspended Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Abdul-Mumin Issah, is convinced the mystery surrounding the unfortunate incident that led to his suspension will soon be unravelled.

Shortly after President Nana Akufo-Addo suspended him, Mr Issah noted in a heartfelt statement that he would cooperate with the police in the prosecution of his case for alleged assault on a cop and reckless driving.

He also used the opportunity to thank individuals who have been pivotal in his journey as the Sekondi-Takoradi MCE.

Mr Issah first expressed appreciation to President Nana Akufo-Addo for allowing him to serve in the government.

He then thanked the Local Government Minister, Dan Botwe, as well as the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, for their assistance while serving in office.

Why was the MCE suspended?

On 4 February 2022, the Sekondi-Takoradi MCE, Abdul-Mumin Issah, was suspended following his alleged assault on a police officer.

The government, through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, issued the directive.

“On the instructions of the President, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Sekondi-Takoradi Assembly, Abdul Mumin Issah has been suspended from office with immediate effect pending an inquiry into his encounter with the police on 3 February 2022,” the statement said.

Mr Issah is said to have committed a motor traffic offence and verbally assaulted the officer who was conducting a lawful duty.

The MCE has since been charged on three counts — assault of a public officer and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of peace and disturbing the peace in a public place contrary to Sections 205, 207 and 298, respectively, of the Criminal and Other Offences Act of 1960, Act 29.

Additionally, he faces a charge of dangerous driving contrary to Section 1 of Act 683 of 2004 as amended by Act 761 of 2008.

He pleaded not guilty to the said charges and was granted GHC100K bail with three sureties when he appeared before the Sekondi-Takoradi Circuit Court on Friday.

The MCE, who was driving a Toyota Land-cruiser with registration number GE 5615-20, is alleged to have driven dangerously and carelessly while approaching a police snap checkpoint at the Kwasimintsim Cemetery on Wednesday, 2 February 2022.

When one of the police officers on duty attempted to stop him, he was heard raining insults on the said officer, who is an inspector.

He vowed to have the said officer transferred to another region.
