Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has argued that the resignation of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta would bring peace to himself and the country.
According to Mr Atta Akyea, the Finance Minister’s resignation might contribute to calmer waters for both the government and the New Patriotic Party.
He also stressed the importance of self-reflection and appealed to Mr Ofori-Atta to prioritize the nation’s interests and contemplate resigning from his position.
“For me, what is very frightening is the fact that you have a whole army of people saying look you’ve had enough…I think that that could be a way for him to relax. Look at all the burdens on one man. So it is his individual decision to make as to whether he should go or he should continue.
“He should look at himself and look at the troubles that everybody believes, I mean when he is not there then the nation will have peace…He should save himself and save the government and have his peace because he needs it,” Mr Atta Akyea said in an interview on Citi TV, monitored by The Ghana Report.
The calls for Mr Ofori-Atta’s resignation have increased over several months due to the country’s economic woes.
The majority caucus in parliament began the calls for the dismissal of the Finance Minister in October 2022 and was later joined by opposition parties, some CSOs and other critics.
But responding to calls for Ofori-Atta’s head, President Akufo-Addo said he could not turn his back on the Finance Minister because he’s been excellent on the job.
Meanwhile, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta expressed deep emotional distress and disappointment over the calls for his removal from office.
He affirmed his commitment to remain in office and serve his beloved country to recover from the economic challenges.
